Ultimately, you could say the film is bigger than the sum of its parts. Well, as anyone who has sat down with a set of seemily incomprehensible numbers and watched them fall into place will know, it is not unlike a spiritual feeling. As Hardy says, “We are merely explorers of infinity, in the pursuit of perfection.” Not unlike the pursuit of god. There is not a mocking comment, even in passing, as the film shows how the faiths that the two hold dear bear upon their work. It also dwells nicely on the fact of Ramanujan’s mathematical genius springing from his extreme religiosity, as Hardy holds tightly his atheist beliefs.

Its not so good a movie that comes close to honoring a man who might be the greatest on par with Newton and. The film is also acutely aware of how difficult it was for two men so disparate, and not just due to their different backgrounds, to come close. Ramanujan can’t ask for friendship, Hardy can’t provide any, and yet one feels the warmth of their growing proximity as the story progresses.

If that's not your thing, though, you should probably look elsewhere. However, sometimes you want a film to do just that - not dazzle us with, say, a 22. The extraordinary workings of an unusual mind are reduced to TV-movie proportions in The Man Who Knew Infinity, the latest and least re-telling of the too-short life of the self-taught Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose tale has previously been told in novel form (David Leavitts The Indian Clerk) and as an Olivier Award-winning play (A Disappearing Number). One of the main story lines in the movie is the tension that is created by Ramanujan’s. One of the things that comes through in the movie is how intuitive mathematics is, Ramanujan revels that he believes that mathematics is about writing down the thoughts of God. Don't believe the negative reactions ("boring", "slow", "routine", etc), but the film is quiet and intelligent - which I found not only understandable but appropriate given the subject matter (hey it's not Iron Man folks). The Man Who Knew Infinity makes mathematics a bigger part of the story.
